Environment Report

Stiftelsen Göteborgs Studentbostäder (SGS) was founded in 1951 and is run by political representatives from the Municipality of Gothenburg, Gothenburg’s Association Union of Students and The University of Gothenburg. The business of the foundation is conducted on commercial terms in competition with other housing companies, with the difference that the foundation is not primarily for profit.

The objective of the foundation is to satisfy the housing requirements of students at institutes of higher education in Gothenburg. We achieve this by acquiring properties or site leasehold rights to thereafter produce and manage student housing and associated business operations and communal facilities. We also acquire or rent housing units and associated space in properties owned by other actors. Another objective of our operation is to engage in other activities linked to the provision of student housing and other room rental.

The number of permanent employees on 31 December 2020 was 80. The business also needs to take on temporary staff periodically,

SGS operations have been environmentally certified since 2004. Our environment management systems cover all aspects of the business including student housing and properties. SGS owns and manages just over 6 200 student housing units distributed throughout 71 properties. SGS rents a further 1 800 student housing units from other property owners. SGS employees are based in 5 different Customer Centres (KC) as follows. Rental, central administration and construction is manager by the KC at Kaserttorget, while the other KCs at Johanneberg, Olofshöjd, Rosendal and Utlanda, deal with property management and tenant service. All KCs have their base in SGS properties – with one exception; the KC at Kaserntorget which has 35 employees. The premises at Kaserntorget are rented by SGS from another property owner.

  • Energy use: 
    The average energy use for heating and housing electricity in kilowatt hours per square meter of heated area (Atemp) and year. All SGS buildings are included.

  • Water use:
    Average water use in cubic metres per square metre of heated area (Atemp) and year. All SGS buildings are included.

  • Waste:
    Amount of residual waste in kilograms per square meter of living space and year. Alla SGS buildings are included.

  • Transport:
    Average carbon dioxide emissions in grams per kilometer mileage and year. All SGS vehicles are included.

    Over time environmental work at SGS has focused on energy saving in the property portfolio. The energy saving since 2007 amounts to almost 27 percent. The comparison with 2007 is linked to SGS’s participation in the Public Utility Climate Initiative, where the base year is 2007. The Public Utility Climate Initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The goal is for housing companies to be fossil-free by 2030 and for energy use to be reduced by 30 percent.  

    An environmentally important change in the business occurred on 1 January 2013 when SGS became the owner of a 2.3 MW wind turbine. One of the motives for the decision to invest in wind power was to do something good for the environment through active participation in increasing renewable electricity production in Sweden. Deliveries from the plant correspond to approximately half of the electricity consumption of SGS properties. To meet the entire requirement, electricity is also purchased from other producers of wind power. Since 2013 all electricity consumed in SGS properties comes from wind power.
