SGS Housing queue
If you are studying or planning to study at least 15 credits/semester on-site at the University of Gothenburg or Chalmers, you can create an account and join our free housing queue – already from the year you turn 17. Are you a doctoral student? Then you can also apply for housing if you have at least 50% activity level and an individual study plan.
To keep your place in the queue, you need to log in once every twelve months. We’ll remind you, so you don’t have to keep track yourself!
In the next step, we’ll go over how renting works. Please read the entire guide so you’re ready when it’s time to look for a place to live!
Student accommodation
We publish the majority of our available student housing here on Mondays and Thursdays. Expressions of interest are open for 3 days.
Each rental process takes a total of 9 days from publication date to contract writing and you will receive information via email and My Pages about where you are in the process.
Student Housing Express
Here we publish student housing, usually single rooms with shared kitchens, with quick move-in. Perfect for those who need accommodation immediately. If we have available properties to rent out at short notice, these are published on Mondays and Thursdays.
Expressions of interest are open for 24 hours and after it closes, a viewing offer is automatically sent to the five applicants with the longest waiting time.
Each rental process takes a total of 5 days from the publication date and you will receive information via email and My Pages about where you are in the process.
Parking lot
SGS Studentbostäder has a large selection of parking spaces around Gothenburg. We offer both outdoor parking spaces, garages and parking spaces with charging points. Everyone is welcome to rent our parking spaces, but you as a tenant have priority. We also rent to companies.
Parking spaces are published on Mondays and Thursdays. Expressions of interest are open for 3 days and after it closes, a viewing offer is automatically sent to the five applicants with the longest waiting time.
Sometimes there may be vacant parking spaces that are not published. Do not hesitate to contact SGS Customer Service if you are interested in parking in a specific area as we can probably find something that suits you.
Expression of Interest
Found a home you like? Submit a request for interest! You can have up to 3 active requests at the same time.
When registration closes, the 5 people with the longest waiting time will receive a viewing offer. If you do not receive an offer, you can delete your registration and look for other housing. Otherwise, it will automatically disappear when the housing is rented.
Viewing offer
Have you received a viewing offer? You will find the tenant’s contact information on My Pages under “My application” and will need to book the viewing yourself.
If you can’t get a hold of the tenant, you can make your decision based on the ad and the floor plan. The viewing period is 3 days for student housing and parking, and 1 day for Express ads.
Response time
When the viewing period is over, you can accept or decline the offer. When the viewing period is over, you can accept or decline the offer. If you receive the contract, you are bound by the agreement, which means you must pay the rent and have 1–2 months’ notice.
If you decline, you will be blocked from applying for 7 days. If you don’t respond at all, the block will last 30 days, but it will automatically disappear after that.
Keep an eye on our messages so you don’t miss important dates!
Search profile
To receive an agreement, you need to upload a current document that shows either that you are studying, have been admitted, or have applied for a program. See below for which documents are accepted at each stage of the admissions process. You have 24 hours after the response deadline to upload the document under My Applications.
Accepted documents (PDF-format):
- You are an active student now = Certificate of registration from Ladok for current courses/programs.
- You have been admitted but cannot register yet = Admission notice from antagning.se.
- You have applied for a program but have not yet been admitted = Screenshot from antagning.se showing your application.
- You are a doctoral student = Employment contract from the university.
Every 180 days you need to verify your information. If you see a notice to update your profile – click it to continue!
Lease agreement
The rental agreement goes to the person with the longest waiting time who has accepted, has the correct documents uploaded, and has an approved credit report. Do you already live with SGS? Then your last six rent payments need to be paid on time.
You sign the agreement via a link in the email or with BankID on My Pages – and you have 4 days. If you fail to sign on time, the agreement will be cancelled and your queue time will be reset.
Once the agreement is signed, you will receive a confirmation email with all the information about your move-in. Now you are ready to begin your housing journey with SGS – Click here to create an account with us and start your journey towards new adventures!
Frequently asked questions and answers
Here you will find our most frequently asked questions regarding applying for accommodation with us.
Can I get extra queue time through student union membership?
Yes, if you become a member of a student union at the University of Gothenburg or Chalmers you can get 3 months of extra waiting time – but only once. Membership must be paid by February 28 (registered April 1) or September 30 (registered November 1). In order for the queue time to be registered correctly, your information (personal identification number or, if you do not have it, date of birth and email address) must match at both SGS and the union. The waiting time does not apply retroactively and does not affect ongoing housing offers.
Can you remove my block as I missed responding on time?
Because we have many applicants, we are careful to follow the deadlines of the rental process to ensure it is fair for everyone. This means that we do not remove blocks due to the applicant not responding on time. It is important that you, who are in an active rental process, keep track of the messages we send you so that you do not miss out on a home.
When will I know if I have received the housing I applied for and accepted?
The rental takes a total of 9 days from publication to signing the contract at Student Housing and parking lot. Express ads take a total of 5 days from publication to contract writing. If you do not receive a contract sent to you on the last day, it means that the contract has gone to another applicant who has 4 days to sign. You will then receive an automatic notification about this.
Is electricity included?
Each advertisement states whether electricity is included or not.
“Electricity included” means that you do not need to sign your own electricity contract as it is already included in the rent.
“Electricity not included” means that you need to establish an electricity network agreement with Göteborgs Energi and an electricity trading agreement with a supplier of your choice.
“Electricity consumption is additional” means that the costs for electricity are added to your rent but are taken care of by SGS. You do not need to get your own electricity contract.
You can also read what applies to each address under “Our properties”.
Is heating and hot water included?
If heating and hot water charges are added to the rent, it is stated in the advertisement text. When there is no mention of additional charges, it means that heating and water are included in the rent. You can also read what applies to each address under “Our properties”.
Can I share my home with someone else?
Yes, you are welcome to share your apartment with a partner or friend. It is perfectly possible to live together with someone who is not studying, provided that the contract holder is studying at least 15 credits/semester.
It is not permitted to accommodate more than one person in our single rooms with shared kitchens as these are intended for one tenant.
How long can I stay with you?
You can stay for a maximum of 6 years as a student plus 4 years as a doctoral student when you rent a home from us.
What is included in the furnished apartments?
Here you will find the inventory list where all the furniture included in the furnished homes is listed.
Are distance learning courses approved?
The purpose of the foundation is to meet the housing needs of students on site at the University of Gothenburg or Chalmers University of Technology. This means that we do not approve distance learning.
How long before I start my studies can I sign an agreement with SGS?
If you are going to start studying in the fall, in August/September, the earliest you can get a rental agreement is June 1st. If you are going to start studying in January, you can get a rental agreement that starts on December 1st at the earliest.
How many offers can I accept?
You can accept all of your offers but can only be awarded one of them. It is not possible to rank your answers if you have received multiple offers.
