Meet Magnus

11 Feb 2026

Since 2013, Magnus Paulsson has been the CEO of SGS Studentbostäder. But what does it really mean to lead a foundation that works every day to create good housing for students in Gothenburg? And who is the person behind the title? In this interview, Magnus shares his journey, what motivates him in his role, and what he enjoys doing in his spare time.

From construction sites to IT – and on to student housing

Magnus is often described as a person with strong drive, energy and commitment, while also being grounded and hands-on. One day you’ll find him in the boardroom wearing a shirt, the next he’s out on site together with a property manager, dressed in workwear and safety boots.

Perhaps it is this combination of practical experience and a broad educational background that has shaped his leadership style.

I’ve studied a variety of things. In upper secondary school, I attended a four-year technical programme specialising in mechanical engineering. After graduating, I worked as a site supervisor on several construction projects. Since I found building and construction very interesting, I also studied construction engineering in the evenings to gain that qualification as well, Magnus explains.

After a few years in the construction industry, he took a new direction:

– In the early 1990s, the economic situation was tough, so I applied to the Computer Science programme at Högskolan Väst. After graduating, I worked in IT within the City of Gothenburg for 13 years, before moving on to a role as Head of Construction at Kretslopp och Vatten.

When the opportunity to apply for the CEO position at SGS appeared, his interest was immediately sparked.

– When I learned that SGS is a foundation, established by the city and the students, with the important mission of providing student housing, I became very interested. It felt meaningful, and I really wanted to contribute.

Leading an organisation – with students in focus

So what does he find most enjoyable about his role – and what is most challenging?

– The most enjoyable part is developing and leading an organisation that is stimulating to work in, where everyone feels that their contribution matters. At the same time, we strive to provide the best possible service to students in a cost-efficient way, since students’ financial resources are often limited.

He also highlights the development of existing properties as one of the most rewarding parts of the job:

– Renovating and upgrading our buildings to meet students’ needs is both creative and very fulfilling.

Much of his motivation comes from the foundation’s mission.

– I’m driven by developing people and organisations, and by contributing to more student housing in Gothenburg. Waiting times are still far too long. Working for a foundation feels especially meaningful, since we don’t have any owners taking out profits. Any surplus is reinvested into the organisation and ultimately benefits the students.

A life close to nature

When he’s not working, Magnus enjoys spending time at his family’s ancestral farm.

– I have several interests, but what I spend most time on is taking care of the farm. That includes agriculture, forestry, and maintaining the buildings. It’s a great way to work hands-on and stay close to nature.

Together, for a better study experience

Together with his colleagues and the board, Magnus works to make Gothenburg an even better city for higher education. Guided by our vision Homes for a better study experience, we strive every day to create safe, affordable and functional living environments that support student life.
