About us

Sustainability & environment

At SGS Studentbostäder, sustainability is a natural part of everything we do. We build and manage student housing with the goal of contributing to a more sustainable city – both today and in the future. Our work is based on three perspectives: economic, social and ecological, and we see them as equally important pieces of the puzzle in our development.

Together for a sustainable future

About us

We take responsibility for sustainability

We also work actively to build and manage in a circular manner. Through our Handslaget agreement, we have committed to using resources, reducing waste and reusing materials to a greater extent. A central part of our work is converting existing properties into student housing – instead of always building new. Everything from old bakeries to offices, industrial premises and even a church have been given new life as student housing over the years. Since a large part of the construction industry’s climate impact comes from new production and material use, each converted property means direct savings for the environment.

The basis for all of this is our sustainability policy, which states that construction and management should be carried out with as little negative environmental impact as possible. This means that we are constantly developing our working methods and evaluating new technical solutions – and adopting them when they have proven to be sustainable and effective in practice. In this way, we use our resources wisely and can ensure long-term quality.

About us

Our own wind turbine

Since 2013, SGS Studentbostäder has owned its own wind turbine just outside Ockelbo. It supplies our properties with just over half of our electricity needs, while the rest also comes from wind-generated electricity. In this way, we can offer our tenants electricity from renewable sources and at the same time contribute to increasing sustainable energy production in Sweden.

For us, the wind turbine is a concrete example of how we work long-term with the environment and sustainability. By producing our own renewable energy, we reduce dependence on fossil fuels and at the same time strengthen Gothenburg’s transition to a more climate-smart city.

2025 will be the twelfth consecutive year that all electricity at SGS Studentbostäder comes from wind power – something we are proud of and which makes a difference to both our students and our environment. This work is also part of our contribution to UN Sustainable Development Goal 7: Sustainable Energy for All, in particular target 7.3 on increasing energy efficiency and the share of renewable energy.

About us

Global goals,
local results

Our work is also linked to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. We have chosen to focus on six goals and seven targets where we have the greatest opportunity to make an impact. These goals are about gender equality, sustainable energy, decent work, sustainable cities and communities, sustainable consumption and production, and peaceful and inclusive societies. The targets include increased female leadership, energy efficiency, youth employment, affordable housing, reduced waste, and inclusive decision-making.

Through long-term thinking, collaboration and responsible choices together with our students, the city and our partners, we create homes that are not just homes – but part of a sustainable future.
